Intensive Supports

A small percentage of students generally does not respond to either schoolwide or targeted prevention and intervention efforts. These are usually children who experience severe or chronic problem behavior that regularly affects the ability to learn in a school environment, both their own learning and that of their peers. Children at the intensive level generally require a great deal of time and energy, and teachers and administrators are more likely to have the time to devote to these children if many of the minor and moderate behaviors are prevented and managed appropriately at the schoolwide and targeted levels.

Systems Features at the Intensive level include:

  • Intensive supports coordinator
  • Staff training in intensive supports
  • School-based referral processes
  • Deescalation response team
  • Emergency preparedness team

Practices at the Intensive level include:

  • Conflict Cycle
  • Escalating Behavior Cycle
  • Intensive level FBA and BSP
  • Life Space Crisis Intervention
  • Engaging Families
  • Community-based referral processes
  • Person-Centered Planning
  • Wraparound
